Amelia Maharaj

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your current role?
My name is Amelia Maharaj, Chemical and Process Engineer for Distillery Operations at Angostura Limited. I am responsible for overseeing the daily operations at Angostura’s Distillery, ensuring all process parameters are within specification and troubleshooting of out of specification parameters to return to normalcy. Additional I drive process optimization initiatives aimed at improving production throughputs and process efficiencies.

What inspired you to enter the distilling industry?
Early on in my career, an Engineering opportunity presented itself at Angostura Limited for which I was thrilled, due to prestigious name that Angostura holds. Over time, I entered the Distillery, where I was exposed to the rum manufacture process. The science of rum making, in particular distillation, quickly peaked my interest and then became my passion due to its similarity with my course of study and the uniqueness and intricacies associated with each process.

Have you faced any challenges as a woman in the industry, and how have you navigated them?
Initially, inclusion into a male dominated environment proved to be a challenge. Through the support and encouragement of Management, I was able to successfully navigate these challenges and attain the support of the full Distillery Team.

Have you seen any positive changes in gender diversity in the industry during your career?
During my tenure (6 years to date), Angostura has always strived to create a gender diverse workforce, which I am very grateful for. We boast an all-female Blending Team, with women occupying very high positions of Corporate Secretary, Chief Operating Officer (past) etc. This always gave me the motivation to work harder as a young professional, being able to see myself occupying one of these positions in the future.

What advice would you give to other women considering a career in the drinks industry?
I would say to go for it. It may not always be easy, but it is certainly a rewarding and fulfilling experience.
