Join us for an insightful day of learning and networking at the Left Handed Giant Brewpub in Bristol.

At this technical seminar you will learn from a panel of experts how to produce the best beer, and which factors and the type of raw materials are vital to make this possible.

Individual talks and presentations will be held on each of the four main ingredients of beer: malt, hops, yeast and water. The material will be aimed at applicants of the General Certificate in Brewing but this seminar is open to everyone who has an interest.

After the seminar day has finished we will gather for a social starting at the LHG Brewpub and proceeding along King Street.

 

Speakers:

  • Andrew Paterson, Lallemand

Andrew has worked for Lallemand for the past seven years. He covers the UK and Scandinavia as a technical support manager and has a deep interest in the production of low alcohol beer using biological methods.

  • Stephanie Brindley, Murphy and Son

Stephanie is a brewing scientist with over 10 years of experience in the industry and is passionate about the science, creativity, and social aspects of beer. Her unique perspective on the brewing industry comes from her background in research, where she studied the nutritional requirements and phenotypic properties of brewing yeast gaining both a Masters and PhD from the University of Nottingham. She also from worked as a brewer at Round Corner in Melton Mowbray before gaining her current role as a Technical Representative at Murphy and Son. So if you’re after brewing tech know-how, she’s a go-to source.

  • Mike Benson, Crisp Malt

Mike, the Brewing Sales Team Manager at Crisp Malt, joined the company in 2019 as a Technical Sales Manager. This role ideally suited his extensive brewing knowledge and passion for the finest brewing ingredients. With an engineering qualification, Mike began his career as a lab technician at a local manufacturer, where he mastered the fundamentals of quality management.

In April 2002, Mike joined Thomas Hardy Burtonwood as a lab technician and embarked on his brewing journey. Over the years, he navigated through various departments, earning his CIBD Diploma in Brewing, and eventually became the second brewer and later the Brewing Manager. When Molson Coors acquired the brewery in 2015, Mike continued to excel as the Brewing Manager. By 2017, he took on a new challenge at Love Lane Brewery in Liverpool, overseeing the installation and commissioning of the brewery.

Mike has been an active CIBD Great Northern Section member since 2010, joining the committee and becoming chairman in April 2017. Mike stepped down after two years as chair but remains a dedicated committee member.

With a solid scientific background and a passion for continuous learning, Mike thrives on problem-solving and isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty in the brewery. His journey is a testament to his dedication and love for the brewing industry.

Parking/how to get there:

No parking is available on site, however, there are multiple car parks local to the venue. Bristol temple Meads Station is approximately 15 mins walk.

Tickets: 30 spaces maximum, so register early to avoid disappointment! Lunch (pizza) is included in the ticket price.

  • £15 - CIBD Members. Please provide your membership number during the booking process to validate your ticket.
  • £30 - Non-members

CIBD Member tickets are only available to those with an active membership at the time of booking.
